Kevin Landau Memorial Scholarship 2009 Recipient The award has been given out since 1976. The most important part of the application is the students dedication to community service. Grades are very important but they are not weighed as heavy as community service. This years recipient is an impressive young woman. She is a long time member of the New City Ambulance Corp. Background and application process On September 24th, 1975, a volunteer firefighter named Kevin Landau was killed while answering an alarm of fire in New City. His untimely death at the age of nineteen has caused the community and surrounding volunteer organizations to establish a fund from which approximately $40,000 to date has been awarded in his name. This year a $2,000 scholarship will be awarded. In this manner, we wish to promote the volunteer spirit among the student body and preserve Kevin's identity in the school from which he was graduated in 1973. It is our intention to select an applicant who best exemplifies the qualities which we remember in our brother Kevin. All applicants must fill out a questionnaire and return it signed to the Main Guidance Office. Those applications selected by the Committee will be returned to the Guidance Office. Students whose applications are selected will be invited to attend a personal interview in New City Fire House, 15 Maple Avenue, New City. The winning applicant will be expected to attend a brief ceremony on Memorial Day, where a commemorative Plaque will be presented following the parade in the Kevin Landau Memorial Park. The committee will judge applicants based upon their contributions of time and effort to community, school activities, and / or organizations. Student grades and individual needs will be participant factors of judging. The decision of the Kevin Landau Memorial Scholarship Committee will be final.
